Dons Pride

They say you can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family. I’m not quite sure where that puts in-laws… but I have been blessed with a terrific sister-in-law. My brother married extremely well (far better than he deserves, as he will be the third or fourth to admit.)

My sister-in-law Holly was an athlete of note, having starred on our high school women’s basketball team before going on to start every game in her four years as a USC Trojan. Every game.

Last night, her number was retired, putting her in a very very small club: Holly Ford joins all-time greats on SBHS wall of fame.

Move over Jamaal Wilkes. Move over Don Ford. Move over Victor Bartolome. Move over Karch Kiraly and make room for the first woman to have her jersey grace the wall of Santa Barbara High’s gymnasium.

Holly Ford, a two-time CIF Player of the Year, Parade Magazine All-American and a pioneer in local girls basketball, will have her No. 23 Dons jersey retired Thursday night in a ceremony at halftime of the Santa Barbara-San Marcos girls basketball game.

She’ll join Dons basketball stars Bartolome, Wilkes and Ford (her older brother) and volleyball great Kiraly on the gym’s wall of fame.

If you follow the above link you’ll see a picture of Holly with my niece, a b-ball standout in her own right, and my dopey younger brother.

I wish I could have been there last night. I hope they got pictures.
