Dad

Fifteen years ago today was the worst day of my life.

I was showering, getting ready to go to work, when my roommate pounded on the bathroom door. Phone call. An emergency.

I knew it, even before I took the phone.

He was gone.

My dad was the best man I’ve ever known, and though he was imperfect like the rest of us, he set an example that is nearly impossible to live up to. Based on the hundreds of people who came to his funeral, maybe I’m right in thinking I was not alone in having held him in high regard.

If by some miracle he had not passed at age 61, I think it unlikely he’d still be with us now, aged 76. I can’t see it; he had too many health problems.

To this day, the greatest compliment I ever get is when someone says I remind them of my dad.

I still miss him every day.
