Spent today working on the site, trying to get the three-column layout to work to my satisfaction. Woo-hoo! Many thanks to the fine folks at blogstyles.com and glish.com for sharing their knowledge. Futher tweaking of the stylesheet will no doubt continue indefinitely, but the major hacking is complete.
